Info box: explosion protection / ATEX

The ATEX directive regulates explosion protection (Ex protection) in Europe. The name ATEX is derived from the French name of the directive: Appareils destinés à être utilisés en ATmosphères EXplosives.

Manufacturers of explosion-protected equipment must mark this equipment uniformly. In addition, they must define the permissible area of application of the equipment by means of an equipment category. The user of the equipment must divide his potentially explosive area into explosive zones depending on the type (D: dust, G: gas) and the presence of flammable media.

In industrial environments and processes, flammable substances and possibly also combustible dusts are often involved. Flammable gases and vapors can be released in these zones. The ATEX directive regulates which equipment is explosion-proof and which work areas are permitted in environments with explosive atmospheres.

ATEX zones for gases and vapours

    Zone 0
Zone in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air of flammable substances in the form of gas, vapour or mist is present continuously, or for long periods or frequently.

    Zone 1
Zone in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air or flammable substances in the form of gas, vapour or mist is likely to occur in normal operation occasionally.

    Zone 2
Zone in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air of flammable substances in the form of gas, vapour or mist is not likely to occur in normal operation but, if it does occur, will persist for a short period only.

    ATEX zones for dust

    Zone 20
Zone in which an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of combustible dust in air is present continuously, or for long periods or frequently.

    Zone 21
Zone in which an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of combustible dust in air is likely to occur in normal operation occasionally.

    Zone 22
Zone in which an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of combustible dust in air is not likely to occur in normal operation but, if it does occur, will persist for a short period only.
